The exhibition at VEBIKUS KUNSTHALLE SCHAFFHAUSEN is for the present the last presentation of theRED. Planned at the end of the year 2012 and started in the year 2013 with the first presentation in the project room MAG3 in Vienna.
The current presentation of theRED_archive[expanded] can in a way be regarded as a continuation of the theRED project. What was originally conceived as a mail-art project, eventually surpassed the concept in terms of intention as well as extent.
The conditions for to participate in the project have been as followed: FREE TECHNIQUE, FREE SIZE, NO RETURN, NO CENSURE and DOCUMENTATION TO ALL. […]!
The thematical initial was a text excerpt from On the Critique of Political Economy by Karl Marx: »… particular attention should be drawn to the aesthetical properties of gold and silver, which make them the natural material for pomp, ornament, glamour, the requirements of festive occasions, in short, the positive expression of supra abundance and wealth. They appear, so to speak, as solidified light raised from a subterranean world, since all the rays of light in their original composition are reflected by silver, while RED alone, the colour of the highest potency, is reflected by gold. Sense of colour, moreover, is the most popular form of aesthetic perception in general …«
theRED_archive[expanded] contains sound and video objects, paintings, textual and conceptual works as well as installations. More than 270 artists with more than 700 works are participating.
Superficially regarded MAIL ART refers to the letters, cards, objects and documentations of art actions, sent within the net of a postal service, which are produced, posted, collected and archived by the participating artists. However, the material objects are significantly less important than the process of a continuous collective self-creation of the network by its participants, in other words acting and communication. It is all about networking and exchange, whereby the net is open, democratic and egalitarian and the channels autonomous and transnational. A major factor here is that this “net art” has a non-commercial character. It does not represent museum art by post but an exchange. It is an aesthetic form of communication.
