THE RED IN ART
The colour red in art, in human history and in the creation of the universe refers to a long history. The red, the magma, the inside of the human body have always been points of contact, aims of contact and signals. Whereas most mammals are hardly able to perceive the colour red, the human eye is very sensitive to it. For this reason red has always been used as a warning signal. However, red is also the colour of blood, of raw meat and of course of love. It induces emotion and attention but is also used to express power and superiority. Not least because of this fact the working class movement chose the colour red to underline their claim of replacing old power structures. However, the human memory of colours has always been less distinct than other senses. Experiments carried out by Josef Albers (Bauhaus) showed that none of his students was able to paint the same shade of red …
The exhibition in the BSA Gallery is not meant as a political statement on the upcoming elections in Vienna, but is intended to thematise art’s claim to comment on social issues, to discuss and to develop new interpretations of current politics by means of an artistic approach.
